Radical Courage

Are you thinking para-sailing, mountain climbing, cliff jumping? While these definitely require courage, what I view as radical courage is when someone is willing to change the way they think - especially if it is a fundamental belief they have held for most of their life. It feels as tricky as changing the names of primary colours or finding out the earth isn't round.

Don't be too quick to label these examples as absurd. Over and over again I have women arrive at the Women's Wisdom Retreat with a belief that they are not worthy. Even when we dig in to find out where that came from they can still have a difficult time accepting that maybe ... just maybe ... this is flawed thinking. Because my work is with women in mid-life they have had plenty of years to gather evidence of this belief. They share their stories of failed parenting, abusive relationships, financial mistakes, loss of friendships, poor body image and generally how no matter what they do, the bottom line is they aren't enough.

This is where Radical Courage pushes them to be willing to contemplate the possibility that they do indeed matter. Sweep aside accomplishments and disappointments, wise choices and mistakes, perfect health and chronic illness and you'll see that in spite of what you might have been taught or gleaned from years of having a narrow view of yourself, if you are still here, you matter.

How would having Radical Courage change the way you see one aspect of yourself today?
