I Only Want My Life to Matter

For all the hard work, public declarations, social stamina and amassing of success, there is a truth that outlasts all of it. If we are lucky enough to live into our 80's and 90's there are not a lot of needs other than manageable health and safety. And to know that our life has mattered.

Save for the dynamic people like Louise Hay, Warren Buffett, Maya Angelou, and others, many people, whether they expected it or not, have found themselves in the 'declining' years of life without any sense of purpose. As I sit with seniors and those dying (at any age) the fading questions are always about feeling useful or being remembered. When there is no reason to get up in the morning, lots of people don't.

So what if you aren't motivated to doing something deemed extraordinary in this over publicized world of YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and the insatiable appetite of the media for drama? What if all that you need is to know that at least one person is counting on you for support, a listening ear, wise counsel or just a warm body to allay nightly fears?

I believe that our lives always matter regardless of what we do. So even if the only person who is comforted by you today is in fact, yourself, that matters. It matters because it means there is one less person feeling lost, alone or frightened. When you love yourself, you raise the vibrational energy in your space and create an aura of joy that will resonate around you.

That may not be enough for many of us who have lived a lifetime of serving others. Perhaps today you will meet someone who wonders if they have anything to contribute. And if you do, let them tell you what they know, how they feel, who they are. It might be all they need to feel they are a bright spot in this world.
