Today is Bell Canada's Let's Talk day which intends to break the silence and broaden the conversation about mental illness. Watching and listening to people like Olympic Medalist Clara Hughes shine a light on the topic of depression is inspiring. And it has nudged me to join the discussion.

I remember many years ago my mother telling my husband that depression ran in the family so I was likely to have bouts of it. The stigma was embarrassing and I was often defensive when I found myself falling into the dark periods of my life. It was in those painful moments when I felt most alone and misunderstood. For so many people, that's the curse of depression - the shame and isolation.

I'm not an expert and don't claim to have the answers. What I do know is that asking for help is essential to recovery. If the first person you call doesn't provide the comforting, compassionate support you need, call someone else. There are so many excellent resources and I know that when I push past my fear and doubt, I've found people willing to listen. And when I am willing to see things from a more empowered perspective and to change my thoughts, I begin the process of healing.

The personal growth work I continue to practice is key to my emotional wellbeing. When I feel the shadows taking over my mind I know that consistent self-care will bring me peace and joy. I found the answers to managing my anxieties and apathy. Please find yours because your life matters.
