Creating Space

Everybody needs a space. A space to rest our minds. A space to connect with our soul self. A space to be in silence. We don't always know we need this space until the busyness of our lives has us running ragged and we long for an escape into peaceful centeredness; a space to just be ... free of distractions.

While meditation and mindfulness take us to an inner space, having a physical space gives us the opportunity to feel surrounded or in touch with things that nurture reflection or renewal. By having tangible touchstones we are brought back to the place of knowing that we are not alone; that we are held and loved by some divine energy.

I've had many places over the years including dark corners of small closets, window ledges and a little mantle in my office. This time of year I can access the many outdoor spaces that I have created such as the Holy Rock Garden, Womb Tree and Gratitude Garden. Just walking by them I feel a signal in my body and mind that calms me. And sitting, lying or standing in a sacred space opens my heart. I breathe easier. I feel relief. I feel safe.

As you contemplate creating a space for yourself be willing to keep it simple and trust that even one object, placed somewhere special, can be enough to satisfy your need for a space. It might be a tiny mandala on a tree branch, a scarf on a table, a gratitude rock in a small dish or whatever moves you to sink into the soul space of your heart.

Perhaps today you will create a space for yourself. And when you do, breathe in the love and acceptance that you are so deserving of.
